Captain Wales officially begins deployment with Australian Army

Prince Harry has begun his month-long tour of duty at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, as Captain Harry Wales.

Alongside Chief of Defence Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin, Captain Wales posed for photos in pouring rain before he headed inside for private meetings.

He personally delivered a letter from the Queen to Air Chief Marshal Binskin, which details Australian and United Kingdom ties and stresses the importance of the relationship as the centenary of the battle of Gallipoli approaches.

In the letter, the Queen thanked the Australian Defence Force for welcoming her grandson into their ranks.

Captain Wales will be attached to units in Perth, Darwin and Sydney before heading to Gallipoli to represent the royal family at the Anzac Day dawn service along with his father, Prince Charles.

A veteran of two tours to Afghanistan, he will wear his British Army uniform during his one-month exchange but will fall under the command of the Australian Army.

In Perth, he will undertake training activities with the Special Air Service Regiment and in Darwin he will head out with members of Norforce, the mostly indigenous unit which patrols across northern Australia.

In Sydney, the Apache helicopter pilot will be attached to the Holsworthy-based 6th Aviation Regiment, training on helicopter simulators and possibly participating in flying operations.

Earlier, he visited the Australian War Memorial in Canberra to kick off his month long tour of duty with our armed forces. 

Accompanied by Governor-General Peter Cosgrove and Director of the Australian War Memorial Brendan Nelson, Harry laid a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

He also toured the Afghanistan and World War I galleries of the memorial. 

Wearing his military fatigues and a dark beret, the prince arrived in Sydney this morning and transferred from his commercial flight into Sydney to a RAAF jet for the Canberra journey.

Heavy fog shrouded Sydney this morning, delaying commercial domestic and international flights by up to an hour.
