Malcolm Turnbull has met with crossbench senators in an attempt to smooth the relationship with his government before any tax reforms go before parliament.

Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm, who opposes any tax increases, says the prime minister is keen to keep the lines of communication open.

"There is a general willingness across the crossbench to give Malcolm the benefit of the doubt," he told ABC radio on Wednesday.

Independent senator Jacqui Lambie said the meeting was productive and there were plans for regular discussions every week parliament sits.

"It is much better up here with Prime Minister Turnbull," she told reporters at Parliament House.

"The atmosphere is a lot happier, people are not walking around with a weight on their shoulders, but I think the test will be in the next three months."
