Chef found dead in pool of blood

A chef has been found dead in a pool of blood at a home in Melbourne last night.

Emergency services were called to a property in Wood Street in the Melbourne suburb of Preston just after 7pm yesterday after a friend raised the alarm.

The 35-year-old chef, who is yet to be identified, was located deceased at the scene.

A neighbour told 9NEWS he heard commotion in the backyard, a distressed woman could be heard saying "we should probably call an ambulance".

Forensic police scoured the weatherboard home, while a crime scene guard was in place for most of the morning.

Earlier this afternoon, detectives seized five cannabis plants from the backyard before loading them into a trailer.

A short time later two women arrived at the home and collected some belongings before leaving. 

They told 9NEWS they preferred not to comment on the man's death.

Another resident said it's normally a quiet street.

"It's not good, it's not very safe area anymore," neighbour Laurie Whyte told 9NEWS.

Homicide Detectives are still waiting for the results of a post mortem to determine if the death is suspicious.
