Precious war medals belonging to the family of a World War II veteran have been stolen from a Melbourne home.

The four missing medals are each engraved with their recipient's name, Richard H.A. Mepstead, and were stolen from a locked safe at a Keysborough home.

Victorian police said in a statement that the medals date belonged to the victim's father who passed away 14 years ago and were stolen on July 11.

Missing is a 1939-1945 Star medal, a Pacific Star medal, a 1939-1945 War medal and an Australian Service medal for the same years.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
