A North Melbourne dad who had lost his job during one of the city's many lockdowns has won the $80 million Powerball jackpot.

It's the third-biggest win in Australian history and the biggest for a Victorian.

The man said he had bought a home just before losing his job.

"I've been working as a cleaner ever since to make ends meet," he said.

"Like for so many people, these lockdowns have been really tough for our family. But I've always said, you've just gotta keep trying. Now, look what's happened.

The "excited" man said he wanted to make life better for his family and for anyone he could help.

"I am certainly keen to pay off the mortgage and the other bills we have to begin with," he said.

"We're going to set our kids up for life.

"I am going to try and help everyone. There's so much we will be able to do with this prize."

The winning numbers of draw 1317 on Thursday, August 12 were 17, 10, 4, 26, 19, 23, 21, and the Powerball was 7.

Divisions two to nine paid out more than $51.5 million across almost two million prizes, The Lott said.

There were 13 second division winners, who each will claim $109,858.60 from the total division pool of $1,428,161.80.

The prize money takes a significant drop for third division winners: 219 entries each claim $3985.25 as their share of the $872,769.75 pool.
