Power has been restored after several thousand homes were blacked out in inner Sydney this morning.

The outage affected power in Ultimo and Pyrmont, with homes and streets going dark just after 3.30am.

Ausgrid initially said it hoped it would be a moderate blackout, with the power to return in four to eight hours.
