Possum finds refuge from storms in toy box

A possum in the Blue Mountains discovered an ingenious way to beat the storms and floods battering the state this week – find a family with a home to adopt it.

Springwood resident Alex Cole said his son Eli found the cute little furry creature taking refuge from the rain on his back verandah yesterday afternoon.

“He spotted the possum just sitting against the back door. He was sort of curled up and looked slightly surprised to see us as well,” Mr Cole said.

The possum soon made himself at home, curling up in a toy box where he found a deflated soccer ball for a pillow.

Mr Cole said the possum didn’t appear to be injured because when he went to check on him yesterday evening he had disappeared from the toy box.

This morning though the family’s new pet was back, snuggled up in his favourite spot.

Wires spokeswoman Carla Toyne told ninemsn more than half of the calls they received this week had been to rescue wildlife caught out by the fierce storms.

“It’s natural with this sort of destruction that you’ll see trees down that animals were residing in,” she said.
