Suspected Melbourne Ebola patient given all clear

A man hospitalised with a suspected case of Ebola in Melbourne is not being treated for the disease.

The Royal Melbourne Hospital told 9NEWS this morning they are not treating a patient for Ebola.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Holman said paramedics were called to treat a middle aged man who was suffering from an infection and was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

"Paramedics took standard precautions used for infectious diseases, and used personal protection equipment," he said.

The patient is believed to have recently visited West Africa.

However, it is understood he has not tested positive to the virus.

Cairns nurse Sue-Ellen Kovack was earlier this month cleared of the deadly virus, after volunteering at hospitals in Sierra Leone.

The outbreak of the virus is the worst in history, having so far claimed more than 4000 lives.

It has also spread to the West, with cases reported in Spain and the US.
