#Selfies showing off an #ootd are set to become the new black for federal politicians.

That is, they'll be posting photos of themselves featuring their "outfit of the day" on social media next week.

Labor frontbencher Julie Owens has dared her colleagues to don their best Aussie duds and hit the parliamentary catwalk, posing not for paparazzi but the question time cameras.

It's all about promoting Australian fashion and encouraging people to shop at local boutiques.

Ms Owens has worn clothes by local designers in parliament every day for the past eight years and she's noticed many others do the same.

She's collecting photos of these "Parliamentary Friends of Aussie Fashion" and posting them to ParlyFOF twitter and facebook accounts.

"In the last week of November, shop local, wear local in the Parliament - I dare you," Ms Owens said.

Already Treasurer Joe Hockey has shown off his suit label.

Labor's Warren Snowdon and Sharon Claydon and Greens senator Janet Rice have also contributed selfies.
