Federal politicians competing in an annual cycling fundraiser have stopped to mark the death of a British ultra-distance rider struck and killed by a car while competing in a race across Australia.

The Pollie Pedal group, including former prime minister Tony Abbott, on Thursday paused on the outskirts of Canberra where Mike Hall died following a collision last week.

"Remembering Mike Hall on the Monaro Highway," Mr Abbott tweeted along with images of the group gathered around a roadside shrine honouring the fallen 35-year-old athlete.
