Poll shows voters back dumping Tony Abbott as PM

Most voters believe the Liberal Party did the right thing in ditching Tony Abbott for Malcolm Turnbull, the latest Newspoll shows.

But despite a surge in support for Mr Turnbull the Coalition has slipped one point against Labor in both primary and two-party preferred terms, with both sides deadlocked at 50-50, according to the poll published in The Australian.

The poll of 1631 voters shows 62 percent of Australians believe the Liberal Party did the right thing to change leaders while 27 perccent disagreed and 11 were uncommitted.

Among Coalition voters, 56 percent supported the change and 36 percent opposed it.

The switch was supported by 71 percent of Labor supporters and 82 percent of Greens supporters.

Mr Turnbull leads Bill Shorten as preferred prime minister by 57 percent to 19 percent.

The Coalition's primary vote fell one point to 43 percent, Labor held at 35 percent and the Greens gained one point to 12 percent.
