Policy not fear won Tas seats: Shorten

Labor leader Bill Shorten has dismissed claims his party won four out of Tasmania's five lower house seats at the election on the back of a Medicare scare campaign.

First-term Liberal MPs Eric Hutchinson, Brett Whiteley and Andrew Nikolic were ousted from the divisions of Lyons, Braddon and Bass respectively, with the ALP taking each seat along with the party's incumbent Julie Collins retaining her southern seat of Franklin.

"Labor won these three seats because we've got great candidates and we've got great policies ... because we're willing to stand up for Tasmanians and not be a rubber stamp for Canberra. Labor won these seats in Tasmania because we will fight to defend Medicare," Mr Shorten told reporters in Launceston on Wednesday.
