Man stable in hospital after being shot by police following fire at Brisbane home

A man has been shot by police during a stand-off with three constables in a Brisbane backyard after a house fire at the property this morning.

The 39-year-old was shot after the officers had arrived at the property on Cabanda Street in Wynnum West at 9.20am to respond to reports of a fire.

Acting Chief Superintendent Heath McQueen said a family was home at the time but he did not provide further information about the police incident.

"Policing is an inherently dangerous occupation, we know that," McQueen said.

"Today our officers were confronted with a situation which required them to use the use of force, adequate for the situation they were confronted with.

"They have done so and, as a result, we are now providing support to those officers who attended today.

"We also had Queensland Fire and Emergency Services officers who were on scene today.

"We are assuring that they are provided support as well around the incident they have witnessed today."

McQueen said at this stage, police were not treating the incident as a domestic violence matter.

The 39-year-old man was given first aid and taken to Princess Alexandria Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

"There is no risk to members of the public as a result of this incident," McQueen said.

"I can confirm this matter is now subject to an investigation by Ethical Standards Command with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission."

McQueen said he would not provide further details about the incident due to the investigation.

He said one of the officers was in his first year of the job.

"It's a lot for him to experience in his first year but as an organisation we provide the welfare and support to our people that they need in times such as this," he said.

No police officers or members of the public were injured, and there is no risk to public safety.
