Police seek dating app user after balcony fall in Sydney

Police are seeking a dating app user following a near-fatal balcony fall in Sydney last weekend.

Just before 4pm on Sunday, November 4 police were called to a unit block in Brisbane Street in Surry Hills following reports a man had fallen three floors.

Officers arrived to find a 37-year-old Swedish and American national had fallen from a unit balcony onto a ground-floor patio, impaling himself on a table leg.

The man remains in a critical condition in St Vincent Hospital’s intensive care unit.

Police are now seeking another man who is believed to have met the victim via a dating app earlier that day.

Officers are appealing for that man to contact police as he may have information that is crucial to their inquiries.

The man is described as being of Middle Eastern or Mediterranean appearance, with a slim build and dark hair.

The man was wearing a dark t-shirt and blue jeans at the time.

Surry Hills Police Area Commander, Detective Superintendent Gavin Wood, reminded users of dating apps to take precautions when meeting new people.

“Know who you are meeting, where you’re meeting them, what their intentions are and perhaps establish some safeguards beforehand such as providing close friends with those details,” Det Supt Wood said.
