Detectives have returned to Melbourne's eastern suburbs in the hunt for a rapist who dragged a woman off a busy street and into a vacant house.

The man grabbed the 21-year-old woman from a footpath on the Burwood Highway around 10am (AEDT) last Thursday.

She was then sexually and physically assaulted inside a nearby abandoned home before the man fled the scene.

Police have set up an information caravan at the Burwood site exactly one week since the incident.

Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Walsh says police are hoping to find anyone who may have seen the man.

"This vicious attack occurred near a busy intersection during broad daylight," he said in a statement.

"We know there are people out there that must have seen something and just don't realise its importance."

The man is described as being of Asian appearance, between the ages of 35 and 45, and was wearing a brown jacket and tan-coloured pants at the time of the attack.
