'Truly a tragic case': Police probe death of baby injured at 41 days old

Officers located Nakita Jade Masling unresponsive after being called to a home in Whyalla Stuart, Adelaide, in June 2016.

The child was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital suffering severe brain damage and limb injuries, and had been in 24/7 care.

She died on Saturday, Detective Inspector Gregory Hutchins from the Major Crime Unit said this afternoon.

“This is truly a tragic case. Nakita was our most vulnerable citizen,” he said.

“Nakita deserved better.”

A 27-year-old man was initially charged with aggravated assault causing serious harm, aggravated assault causing harm and criminal neglect, while a 23-year-old woman was charged with criminal neglect.

Detectives are now urging anyone with information to come forward.

“Anyone who might have thought that things were going to go away or get better, or anyone who just thought it was not their place to step up, I say ‘now is the time’,” Det. Insp. Hutchins said.
