Alleged cop stabber charged with attempted murder, assaulting nurse

Police have charged a man accused of stabbing a female officer in the neck in Adelaide’s north with a raft of offences, including assaulting another emergency worker.

The 27-year-old man remains in the intensive care unit with non-life-threatening injuries from being shot in the leg by police following the confrontation on Main North Road, Elizabeth East, on Wednesday morning.

He has not been formally interviewed yet, but has been charged with a string of charges, including attempted murder, aggravated assault, aggravated threat to life, and assault on a prescribed emergency worker (nurse).

Police did not provide any information about how and when the nurse was allegedly assaulted.

The man was also charged with illegal use, and carrying an offensive weapon.

The police officer is also in hospital for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

In a statement about her condition, police said she will remain in hospital for several more days to recover.

“The officer and her family have requested privacy at this time as she focuses on her recovery,” police said.

“Police ask that this request be respected and thank the community for the support and well wishes that have been extended to her and her loved ones.”

The alleged incident happened after police received reports from the public that a man armed with a knife was running across Main North Road.

When officers went to confront him, he allegedly stabbed one of them in the neck.

The man was shot in the leg by police and both injured parties were rushed to the hospital.

SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said violent acts against officers can have profound and lasting consequences.

“When police officers are subjected to acts of serious violence in the course of their duties, the community rightly expects offenders to be held accountable,” he said.

“It is important that the consequences imposed reflect the gravity of the offending and the significant harm caused to those who dedicate themselves to protecting the community.”
