Police officers are used to putting their lives on the line to protect others, but what about when they put themselves in the ocean to save a different type of mammal?

A Gold Coast officer has done just that, wading into the shallows to help a dolphin that had become trapped.

Video, exclusive to 9NEWS, shows the man, who is fully dressed in his entire uniform,  thigh-deep in the ocean attempting to coax the dolphin back into deeper waters.

“How could it get stuck there?” onlookers can be heard saying.

After a few moments, the officer gives the dolphin one last push and it swims off, as he throws his hands up in the air, jubilant.
