A senior Sydney police officer has been suspended on full pay amid reported child pornography allegations.

The Seven Network reported on Thursday the Bankstown officer, an acting inspector, had been caught by Canadian police in a child pornography investigation titled Project Spade.

Canadian police reportedly alerted their NSW counterparts about the officer.

NSW Police would not comment on the allegations but confirmed an officer had been suspended.

"The Professional Standards Command is investigating a complaint involving an officer from the south west metropolitan region," a spokeswoman said.

"The officer is suspended on full pay pending the outcome of inquiries."

Project Spade was launched three years ago by Toronto police and culminated in 350 arrests worldwide last year.

More than 60 men were arrested and more than 400 charges were laid as part of Operation Thunderer, the Australian arm of the global operation.

The Australian Federal Police made the arrests last November, charging the men for involvement in the Canadian-hosted website that allowed customers to trade and purchase child sex images and videos.

At the time, the AFP said six Australian children were abused in exploitation material.
