Residents of the central Victorian town of Kyneton have been left reeling, following the death of a baby boy left in a hot car yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to a property in Acacia Drive about 3pm after reports a child had been left in the vehicle as temperatures soared to more than 30 degrees.

Despite breaking a window, paramedics were unable to revive the 22-month-old boy.

Today a floral memorial popped up around the site, with locals saying they were shocked by the incident.

“It makes you want to hold your own child a bit closer,” Christine McKimm said.

“It’s so sad.”

Homicide detectives have been called in to investigate the death but are yet to speak with the mother, who is reportedly too distraught.

In 2013, a baby died in a car outside a Perth daycare after a father left the child in the back seat and police are urging parents to be extra careful as the weather heats up.
