Police are searching for a murderer after a homeless man was killed inside his car near a Sydney primary school.

The 68-year-old man was found with fatal stab wounds inside his white Ford Laser parked on Mons Avenue, Maroubra, on Wednesday night.

Investigators scoured an apartment block nearby the crime scene yesterday and examined a second vehicle after receiving numerous tip-offs, police said.

It remains unclear why the man was targeted.

Locals told 9NEWS the victim was “friendly” and “part of the community.”

“He was a friendly old man he didn’t really have much to do with any people he just slept in his car, you could tell that because the windows were fogged up and he put the shade across the front windscreen and just kept to himself,” Maroubra resident Todd Mcgrath said.

“I used to drive up this street every day, I’d see him every day, he’s part of the furniture, part of the community.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
