Police hunt for beer-drinking train surfer

Police are on the hunt for a beer-guzzling train surfer after he was filmed performing the dangerous stunt at a Melbourne railway station.

Video filmed by a fellow commuter shows the man clinging to the train's back windscreen wiper with one hand and drinking a beer with the other, shortly before 11pm on January 31.

With carriages packed after the cricket, the train driver is completely unaware of the liability behind him as he departs the platform at Jolimont station.

"It's not funny, it's not brave and it puts not just the person who does it but others at risk," Acting Inspector Patrick Allen said.

News of the stunt prompted calls from the rail union for more station staff on platforms.

It comes as Metro trains release alarming figures detailing 75 incidents of train surfing and 510 graffiti vandals during 2013.

Last month alone, there were 11 train surfing incidents and 40 graffiti vandals.

Train surfers face fines of $354 for adults and $72 for children.
