A police vehicle has been rammed during a car chase in Melbourne.

After spotting the allegedly stolen Audi in Northcote on Thursday evening, officers followed and eventually tried to intercept it in nearby Preston but the driver failed to stop.

A short time later, the car struck another vehicle and rammed a police car, police say.
