Police astounded after finding Melbourne man travelling in 'barely drivable' car

Police say they have been left "astounded" after finding a man behind the wheel of a "barely drivable" car south-west of Melbourne.

The car, believed to have once been a Nissan Skyline, which was missing most of its headlights and did not have number plates, was seen travelling on Patullos Road in Lara just after 3.30am on Monday, October 31.

The 27-year-old driver said he had driven from Manor Lakes in the car, which is about 38km from where he was stopped by police.

The car was not registered and was missing an interlock required for the man to drive.

The Lara man was also allegedly driving while suspended.

The car was impounded at a cost of $1134, his licence was immediately suspended.

He has been charged with drive whilst suspended, drive unregistered and fail to have interlock.

He has been bailed to appear at Werribee Magistrates' Court later this month.
