Police and drug dogs swoop on Western Australia mine site

Police and drug sniffer dogs have swooped on a Fortescue Metals Group mine in Western Australia hunting for illicit substances.

Some 300 fly-in, fly-out workers were met by police when they landed at FMG's Christmas Creek mine site in the Pilbara this morning, with employees and luggage searched for drugs.

No arrests were made but two contractors are being investigated and could face the sack under FMG's zero-tolerance policy.

One was issued a summons for possessing drugs without a prescription while the second contractor is awaiting test results from a "non-negative" result.

The crackdown comes after FMG's head of security contacted WA Police to alert them to possible drug abuse problems at some mine sites in the Pilbara.

Fortescue CEO Nev Power said the illegal drugs put the safety of the users and their mates at risk.

"We have worked with WA Police to have police with sniffer dogs meet our planes at Christmas Creek and will continue that process through the rest of our mine sites," Mr Power told ABC radio.

"WA Police will do the same at other sites in the Pilbara."
