Prime Minister Tony Abbott won't ask Bronwyn Bishop to step down, insisting the speaker has his confidence.

Mr Abbott says Mrs Bishop has admitted an "error of judgment" in chartering a helicopter for a Liberal fundraiser and had repaid the money.

"She's a good speaker, she has my confidence," he told reporters in Queensland on Saturday.

Mrs Bishop told Sky news the matter was a political beat up and a distraction, and that she had decided to pay back the money when she saw the figure.

"The bookings was just made in the ordinary way, there's been a political beat up and I'm very sorry it has taken the heat off Mr Shorten and his triple whammy Carbon Tax bill," she said.

She is scheduled to speak to the media in Sydney on Saturday afternoon.
