PM thanks emergency services workers

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has offered his condolences to the families of three people who have died in floods amid wild weather along eastern Australia.

He also reiterated emergency services warnings that no one should try to cross floods for any reason.

The federal government stood ready to help out where needed but to date there had been no requests for commonwealth assistance, Mr Turnbull told reporters in Melbourne.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten offered to visit flood-affected areas with Mr Turnbull.

"Both he and I know that there are matters which are more important than the current political struggle in which we are engaged," he told reporters in Adelaide on Monday.
