Malcolm Turnbull says former minister Andrew Robb misunderstands planned new foreign interference laws.

The former trade minister, who took up a job with Chinese firm Landbridge Group when he quit parliament, has accused his ex-colleagues of suggesting his behaviour is "treasonous" as it calls for a new security register.

"I think Andrew (Robb) has somehow or other misunderstood what is being done here," Mr Turnbull told ABC radio on Friday, comparing the proposed register to the lobbyists' register and insisting Mr Robb was a patriotic Australian.
