PM Malcolm Turnbull honours his 'battler' dad in election campaign ad

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has honoured his Aussie battler father in a new ad kicking off the fifth week of the election campaigns.

The montage of the Australian PM and his father Bruce Turnbull, who died in 1982, aims to dispel criticism that he is out of touch with the general Australian public due to his acquisition of wealth in later life.

"We didn't have much money, he was a hotel broker and for most of that time he was battling like a lot of people are, a lot of single parents are, certainly," Mr Turnbull narrates.

"I was the main object of everything he wanted to achieve. He was very focused on doing what was right for me."

Bruce Turnbull died in a plane crash in NSW's Hunter Valley region in 1982.

Despite a tight budget, the hotel broker managed to put this son through Sydney Grammar School to ensure he had the best chance at a good life.

"I didn't feel I missed out on anything because I had lots of love," Mr Turnbull narrates.

Mr Turnbull has faced ongoing criticism since he was appointed Prime Minister with Labor highlighting his wealth as one of the many factors placing him "out of touch" with the Australian public.

The PM was also chastised last year for his business connections to the Cayman Islands.

"We have got a Prime Minister buying into schemes that have a million dollar US minimum buy-in in a notorious tax haven, and he is trying to say ‘oh, I am just like everybody else, we all do it," deputy opposition leader Tanya Plibersek told the ABC in October 2015.

"I just think it is extraordinarily out of touch."
