Pilot killed in small aircraft crash in Victoria was experienced, police say

A 52-year-old pilot has died after crashing his microlight aircraft south-east of Melbourne.

Emergency services today combed the site of the crash for debris. It is believed a loose helmet may have contributed to the crash.

The crash occurred just before 7am today at Koo Wee Rup, 63km south-east of Melbourne in Victoria.

Victoria Police believe the man was an experienced pilot who lived in Burwood.

"He's taken off to about the height of about the trees behind us, after which he's experienced technical difficulties," Victoria Police Acting Inspector Glen Finlay told 9News.

It is understood the plane's owner was watching and called triple zero.

The pilot died at the scene and was the sole occupant of the aircraft.

"Thoughts go out to the families and the loved ones of the deceased person and also the people who potentially witnessed that today," Acting Inspector Finlay said.

The pilot was a member of the Sports Aviation Federation of Australia. The organisation is assisting police.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with the pilot's family and friends at this sad time," SAFA said in a statement.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
