Pixar animators debut ‘dark’ new short film for adults

Pixar animators have released a new and uncharacteristically dark animated short film, Borrowed Time, online. 

Borrowed Time is a six-minute animation that tells the story of a mourning sheriff who returns to the site of a tragic accident he has spent a lifetime trying to repress.

Creators Andrew Coats and Hamou-Lhadi, both animators for Pixar, created the film in their spare time" to "challenge" mainstream perceptions of animated films.

"In America, animation has largely become synonymous with kids’ films, whereas elsewhere around the world it’s celebrated as a medium that can be used to tell any story," Mr Coats told Variety.  

"Having worked on family films with a lot of heart and comedy, we wanted to do something outside of our comfort zone: a serious, action drama. We knew this would be a huge challenge for us," Mr Hamou-Lhadj added.

Borrowed Time has already garnered a slew of awards, including First Place Animation at the USA Film Festival, after a successful run on the international film festival circuit.
