A photographer has had a close encounter with dolphins at a beach off the coast of South Australia.

Nikki Redman was taking in the sights of Emu Bay on Kangaroo Island with her dogs Digger and Chaz when she saw two of the mammals appear.

Dolphin sightings are not uncommon in the area but Redman was surprised to see them so close to the shore on Monday morning.

"We come across dolphins a lot on our walks, and I've swam with them many times," Redman said.

"I was blown away that they came in so close to check out the dogs, they followed us down the beach."

Redman posted vision of the encounter, which showed one of her dogs undeterred by the dolphins.

"Digger the heeler was a bit nervous, but Chaz my other dog has been known to run out and check them out," she said.
