Man accused of shooting schoolgirl Phoenix Newitt granted bail

A man accused of shooting a Tasmanian schoolgirl following an argument at a supermarket has been granted bail.

Nathan Richard Campbell, 25, pleaded not guilty in Launceston Magistrates Court today to charges of causing grievous bodily harm and recklessly discharging a firearm over the shooting of Phoenix Newitt last week.

The 11-year-old suffered serious injuries after she was hit by bullet fragments in the head, neck and heart while in a car in Deloraine, west of Launceston, last Tuesday.

Phoenix was flown to Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital, where she woke from her coma on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to 9NEWS this week, Phoenix’s mother, Sarah, recalled the horrifying events that led to the alleged shooting.

"It's a really hard experience that I don't wish on any parent, no parent should have to deal with this," she said.

"I'm not angry, I don't want revenge.

"I just want Phoenix to be better."

The bullet went through the rear window on the right hand side of the car, before the fragments hit Phoenix.

Phoenix was in a coma for five days and underwent major surgery to remove bullet fragments from her face, neck and skull. 

When she woke up on Sunday morning, she started to speak again and immediately asked for her mum.

Doctors say Phoenix will likely be recovering in hospital for months.

Mr Campbell's case will next be in court on November 20.
