Push to let all Aussie tenants keep pets in rental properties

The Victorian government is leading calls to make renting with animals a right for all Australian tenants.
Under the proposed legislation, Victorian tenants would have the right to own a pet, with landlords only able to refuse in specific circumstances.
“No one should have to choose between the pet they love and a place to live – our reforms will end this discrimination,” Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford said in an official statement.
Ms Pulford added, “Victoria is a great state for people to live…we want it to be a great state for pets too.”
Currently, 15 percent of dogs and cats surrendered to the RSPCA are given up due to rental restrictions.
Similar reforms are yet to be announced for the remaining states.
The push for better rights for tenants with furry friends is spearheading a new ‘Better for Pets’ campaign from Labor, which aims to educate Victorians on the health of their pets.
Fact sheets and free pamphlets will be available from vet clinics, pet store, councils and schools.
