PETER GRESTE'S FIGHT FOR FREEDOM:

2013

DECEMBER: Australian journalist Peter Greste and his Al Jazeera colleagues, Canadian-Egyptian Mohamed Fahmy and Egyptian Baher Mohamed, arrested for broadcasting false news and supporting the blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood.

2014:

FEBRUARY: Greste refused bail.

MARCH: The trio fails to win a direct request for a judge to free them.

JUNE: Greste and Fahmy found guilty and sentenced to seven years' jail, Mohamed gets 10-years, sparking international outrage, protests and social media campaigns demanding their freedom.

2015:

JANUARY:

- Egypt's top court orders a retrial of all three men.

- Greste's lawyers apply to the Egyptian government for his deportation.

FEBRUARY:

- President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi orders Greste's expulsion under a new law permitting foreign prisoners to be deported.

- Fahmy and Mohamed remain in jail. Fahmy's hope he'll also be deported to Canada, while Mohamed's family is hoping for a presidential pardon, or acquittal on appeal.
