Peter Dutton's office targeted in late-night attack

Vandals have smashed up federal Liberal leadership challenger Peter Dutton's electorate office and sprayed offensive comments about him on a nearby footpath.

The Brisbane office was extensively damaged in the wake of Mr Dutton this week mounting a challenge to topple Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Four reinforced glass windows and two glass doors were smashed, leaving gaping holes.

A nearby footpath was also defaced with the words: "Deport Dutton" along with an obscene comment.

A member of the public noticed the damage at the office in the suburb of Strathpine and called police just after 2am on Friday.

Mr Dutton is among three senior Liberals who have declared their intentions to stand if enough party members sign a petition saying they want a new leader to replace Mr Turnbull.

He said his position was untenable and retired from the cabinet after a failed challenge on Tuesday.

This is not the first time the former home affairs minister's office has been targeted.

In March, a man and a woman hurled a rock and paint at the front of the office, when three people were inside. No one was hurt.
