Pest review recommends more reviews

A review of invasive pests in Australia has recommended a further 11 reviews.

A nine-month parliamentary inquiry into environmental biosecurity risks found there were "complex" and "unique" problems facing the nation, due in part to the large number of species involved.

The committee makes 26 recommendations, with 11 requests for departments, agencies and officials to carry out reviews of operations such as cargo surveillance measures.

It also wants more co-operation between state and federal public servants.

A priority list of pests and diseases not yet in Australia but causing concern should also be published, the report says.

Regulations governing private bird imports may also need to be strengthened and a national database of seized exotic wildlife should be developed.
