Perth has been treated to an incredible display of nature as an early autumn storm created a spectacular lightning show across the city.

Residents scrambled to catch a glimpse of the storm as it lit up the sky and some got a bit more than they bargained for.

Sisters Katelin and Shannan Thomas were in the process of moving boxes from their home in Karrinyup when they stopped to look at the storm.

They decided to record the sound of thunder and lightning on their phones when they came within less than a metre of a lightning strike.

“We were walking up and down our driveway moving boxes and the thunder from the storm was getting really loud,” Katelin Thomas told 9news.com.au.

“Then we randomly stopped in the garage and I started filming trying to catch how loud it was and then it happened!

“It was honestly so loud and terrifying, we both went into shock. It didn’t hit us but I honestly think if we were even half a metre closer, out of the garage, it could have been a different story.”

A severe thunderstorm warning was in place in the late afternoon but was cancelled by 9pm.

Social media was taken over with photos and footage of the storm.
