‘Postcard Bandit’ loses latest bid for freedom in Supreme Court
Notorious Perth criminal Brenden Abbott, known for numerous bank robberies and twice escaping prison, has had his latest bid for freedom unanimously rejected by the Court of Appeal.
Lawyers argued the sentence should be reduced because he already spent 17 years in a Queensland jail for other crimes committed before he escaped Fremantle Prison in 1989.
But three appeal judges unanimously dismissed the case in the Supreme Court today.

The court said the original sentences were appropriate and it would not intervene on the basis of mercy.
"The appellant consciously and deliberately chose to engage in criminal conduct which led to the sentences that were imposed upon him in Queensland," the judgment read.
The infamous crim will now have to wait until 2026 to get another chance at freedom, when he becomes eligible for parole.

His latest attempt to score an early release began in February when he appealed his jail term, set to expire in 2033.
The 57-year-old was dubbed the “postcard bandit” as rumours spread across Perth alleging Abbott teased officers with postcards while he was on the run.
Abbott did not appear in court for the decision today.
