Driver flees as car bursts into flames after high-speed chase

A dangerous driver who led police on a high speed chase through Perth’s south has escaped arrest after running from his burning car. 

The Mitsubishi sedan was recorded travelling in the emergency lane at more than 150 kkm/h on the wrong side of busy Tonkin Highway in Champion Lakes. 

The vehicle eventually crashed on a median strip near Ranford Road and erupted in to flames, setting neighbouring bushland alight. 

The chase started on Broadley Place in Gosnells around 9am today when the offender refused to stop for police. 

Several motorists have since reported near misses, including young mother Abby Honey. 

“Why would you do something like that?” she said. 

“It’s bad enough when you see people speeding, but driving on the wrong side of the road?

“What if someone had to pull over in the emergency lane and change their tyre ... and this bloke is in the emergency lane driving in the opposite direction, screaming past us, it’s ridiculous.”

The driver is still on the run.
