Perth mosque latest target in two-month religious vandalism spree

A Perth mosque has been vandalised with white paint, but local Muslim leaders do not believe it was a targeted, anti-Islamic attack.

The Ar Rukun Mosque in Rockingham, south of Perth was targeted by vandals sometime between Sunday evening and yesterday afternoon.

White paint was splashed over the main entrance, front porch and brick walls.

But unlike other recent attacks on Perth places of worship, no racist or anti-Islamic slogans were sprayed on the building.

Sheikh Bahaadin Penjweny told 9NEWS it was disappointing the mosque has been targeted, but said vandals were a problem for many in the area. He said he did not believe the vandalism was an anti-Muslim attack.

Police discovered a paint tin nearby and are hoping it will lead to the discovery of those responsible for the attack.

This is not the first time the mosque has been the victim of vandalism, five months ago vandals climbed onto the roof and wrote racist and offensive slurs.

In October, two Perth mosques were vandalised with graffiti that read "Ban Islam".

Two weeks later, two girls were caught on camera spraying similar slurs on the walls of a Sikh temple in Bennett Springs.

The Sikh religion originates in India and has nothing to do with Islam.

The WA state opposition has previously stated it wants tougher graffiti laws so that racist and religiously-motivated attacks attract tougher penalties.
