Perth man returns home on mercy flight after drifting accident

A Perth man has finally returned home to Australia after he was left paralysed in a horror motor sport accident in Japan.

Danny Westwood was reunited with his mother Karen Triffett this afternoon when he touched down in Perth after a mercy flight home.

The 25-year-old had been in Fukushima to compete in a drifting competition when he rolled his vehicle during a practice lap.

He was left paralysed from the chest down and has limited movement in his arms, and was in hospital for more than a month.

“He’ll never give up hope, there will always be a hope he walks again, but he’s just determined to live the best possible life he can with what he’s got,” Ms Triffett said.

“He’s still not going much control in his hands but he’s determined.

“He’s been lifting weights in hospital that are strapped to his arms and asking for heavier ones, they were heavy enough.”

Mr Westwood will now spend two years undergoing intense rehabilitation and will be unable to work in his job as a mechanical fitter.
