Driver allegedly shoots at police during chase through Perth

A driver has been charged with more than a dozen offences after he allegedly shot at police during a chase through Perth.

Police spotted a Mazda BT-50 utility, which was earlier reported stolen from Byford, driving north on Albany Highway in the south-east suburb of Kelmscott about 1.10pm yesterday.

Emergency lights and sirens were activated but the driver allegedly failed to stop, sparking a pursuit.

The car drove through several suburbs.

During the chase, the driver allegedly pointed a long arm firearm out the window and shot on three different occasions.

He then allegedly shot a round of ammunition through the rear windscreen at pursuing police before ditching the car on Hines Road in North Dandalup.

He allegedly stole an Isuzu truck.

"During this time, the man allegedly pointed his firearm towards the Police Air Wing aircraft overhead, before continuing to evade police," Western Australia Police said.

"Soon after stealing the Isuzu truck, the man was intercepted by Tactical Response officers, removed from the vehicle, and arrested."

Police described it as "a horrendous incident"

"Incredibly frightening for everyone that was involved," Commander Gordon Fairman said.

"Incredibly erratic, incredibly dangerous to not only the community and to the officers but to himself as well."

The 36-year-old man from Welshpool was taken to hospital for treatment to minor injuries.

He was charged with 17 offences, including intent to cause grievous bodily harm, no authority to drive - suspended, and reckless driving to escape pursuit by police.

The man faced court today as inquiries into the matter are ongoing.
