Perth hit with severe thunderstorms and a warning that there's more to come

Winter has come early for Perth as a severe storm lashed the city, with at least 370,000 lightning strikes hitting Western Australia's south-west.

A flash of lightening appeared across Perth's sky on Tuesday night, followed by a loud crack of thunder.

The massive storm lit up the night as residents in the city watched from their homes.

From her balcony in North Lake, Pyper Stancer says she saw a huge bolt of lightning.

Priscilla in Koondoola exclaimed "oh my lord" as she witnessed the storm rage on.

Fremantle Harbour flashed a purple hue amid the lightning, as a security camera in Port Kennedy around 44km south captured the intensifying weather.

"What we saw was a low pressure system move across the south-west corner of the state and it had a front attached to it," meteorologist Luke Huntington from the Bureau of Meteorology said.

Altogether at least 370,000 lightning strikes were reported across the south-west, with 30,000 impacting the metro area.

Small hail also fell in Wanneroo and many areas recorded high rainfall.

In Perth, Roleystone recorded the most with 22mm, while Mandurah had 15mm, Jarrahdale 14mm, and Anketell 8mm.

The most rainfall recorded to 9am on Wednesday was in Cape Naturaliste in the south-west corner, which received 50mm, according to the BoM.

Perth was hit with another deluge of rain about lunchtime, and the BoM is warning that more stormy weather is on its way.

"We are seeing a significant cold front moving through on Sunday so we might see some more lightning and some further rainfall," Huntington said.
