Boys charged over bashing of 88-year-old man

An elderly pensioner has been left bloodied and bruised after being attacked in his Perth home.

Dave Hughes, 88, a former country cop, tried to fight off two attackers who came to his front door in Wongan Hills last Sunday night.

He was bashed in the head with a weapon, believed to be a slab of metal.

The grandfather said he tried to put up a fight.

"They just said 'I want your car keys'," Mr Hughes said.

"That's when I tried to slam the door shut but he had his arm or his shoulder in there."

The second offender then snuck into the house through a back door and stole his keys, making off with his 1993 Ford Falcon Sedan.

Mr Hughes, who was left with a large gash to his head, ran to a neighbour's house covered in blood.

He was taken to hospital where he spent the night.

"He whacked me in the head. It felt like he had a piece of steel in his hand, you know," he said.

"And that cut my head and blood was coming out, plenty of blood coming out all over the place."

Police have charged two boys, aged 13 and 14, with a string of offences including aggravated robbery and home burglary, as well as aggravated unlawful wounding.
