Perth cats in desperate need of homes

Perth's Cat Haven has been overwhelmed with hundreds of homeless kittens over the festive season, with some in terrible condition.

Spokeswoman Chandra Woodley said many cats were dumped in baskets, boxes and suitcases, which caused potentially fatal stress and injuries.

"When kittens are kept in such bad conditions, they often have to be put to sleep due to heat stress or injury, which is devastating," she said.

With more than 400 kittens and cats in foster care, and more than 50 kittens at the Cat Haven shelter or Pet Barn stores, they are desperate for people to adopt a new pet, Ms Woodley said.

Cat Haven receives more than 8000 unwanted animals a year and it costs more than $13 a day to keep a cat at the shelter.

The Shenton Park facility is offering a two-for-one deal with two kittens costing $165, two adult cats for $99 and two cats over the age of seven for a gold coin donation.

The adoption packages include sterilisation, micro-chipping and all vaccinations to comply with the new cat laws.

Ms Woodley said the foster care program was also full and urgently needed carers.
