The West Australian sporting community is rallying around the family of a star basketball player killed in a freak accident on a busy Perth highway.

Anthony Exeter had been left fighting for life after a canopy flew off a boat being towed in front of him on Friday afternoon slamming through his windscreen.

His team, The Rockingham Flames, described the 41-year-old as a "greatly respected and admired player".

Yesterday, Anthony's wife Kelly said her husband had passed away.

"Last night I got the chance to sleep hand in hand with my soul mate. Tonight he passed away peacefully shortly after breathing tubes were removed," she posted online.

"To say we are devastated is an understatement... Thank you to everyone for your thoughts, wishes and prayers over the last two days. We are so privileged to have the network of love and support we do."
