A teenage boy arrested after allegedly firing a gun in the carpark of a Perth school is believed to be a former student.

Just before midday, police were called to Atlantis Beach Baptist College in Two Rocks, in the city's outer northern suburbs.

The 15-year-old is accused of firing three shots, one of which hit a school building which had people inside.

Police Commissioner Col Blanch said officers were inundated with triple zero calls, including from students as young as 12.

He said three shells were recovered from the scene, and two firearms were seized from a car the teenager is thought to have arrived at the school in.

The guns were a .234 rifle and a .22 rifle, licensed to the house the teenager lives in.

"But I want to stress, it's three hours since the incident and we've got a long investigation ahead of us," Blanch said.

He described the shooting as "a one-off".

"It's one of the rarest incidents in Australia," Blanch said, adding he didn't believe anything like it had ever been reported in Western Australia.
