Labor MP Joel Fitzgibbon has rejected Barnaby Joyce's claim an asylum-seeker used the controversial medevac laws to get into Australia following a botched penis enlargement.

An Iranian man was transferred from Port Moresby last month after a doctor ordered medical treatment in Australia after he injected himself with palm oil.

The required surgery will reportedly cost taxpayers upwards of $10,000.

Mr Joyce said the decision called into question the Labor-backed medevac legislation, which the Morrison government is looking to repeal.

"I reckon it's a bit early on a Monday morning to be talking about do-it-yourself penis enlargements. But Barnaby is just wrong," Mr Fitzgibbon told the Seven Network on Monday.

"The medevac laws have made no change to this situation.

"(Home Affairs Minister) Peter Dutton would have brought this person back to Australia pre-medevac laws because despite the ridiculous nature of the events that led to it, he would have always been brought to Australia if he self-harmed and faced serious injuries."
