Penfolds unveils most expensive new Grange ever sold

Penfolds has released its most expensive ever bottle of wine - a five-vintage blend that retails for a wallet-scorching $3500.

Named Penfolds g5, the red wine is a blend of five vintages of Penfolds Grange stretching back to 2010.

Only 2200 bottles of Penfolds g5 will be made available globally, and a 750ml bottle will retail for $3500.

The wine is the final release in Penfolds "g" series, after Penfolds g3 was launched in 2017 and g4 was launched in 2020.

It is the most expensive retail price ever asked for a bottle of Grange, but pales in value compared to the value of some historic vintages on the auction market.

In July a single bottle of Penfolds Grange from 1951 was sold at auction for a record-breaking $142,131, making it the most expensive bottle of Australian wine ever sold.

If that seems too cheap to you, in December 2020 a complete Penfolds Grange set of 64 bottles dating from 1951 to 2014 sold for $430,000.

But it's not always the most expensive Grange that gives drinkers the biggest headaches.

In 2014 former NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell resigned from office after an independent corruption commission found he had accepted a $3000 bottle of Penfolds Grange from a construction company executive, marking a conflict of interest.

He called it a 'massive memory fail' and could not recall receiving the bottle.

Today's release is said to have "proven aging potential", meaning those who snap up one of the 2200 bottles are likely sitting on an appreciating asset.

Penfolds is accepting expressions of interest for the g5 from today via their website.
